This policy covers the Sportraxs app for iPhone and Android (“the app”), published by Sportraxs (“we”, “us”). In short: the app sends crash reports to help us fix problems and, if you turn them on, uses Google's Firebase to deliver alerts. Neither identifies you.
If the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a crash report to Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.), the service we use for crash reporting. A report contains technical details: what went wrong and where in the app's code, the app version, the device model, the operating system version and similar device information, such as free memory.
A crash report does not contain your name, email address, location or the runners you follow, and the app does not attach screenshots. We have set Sentry not to store IP addresses.
We use crash reports only to find and fix problems in the app. Sentry keeps them for up to 90 days and then deletes them.
The app can alert you when a runner you follow reaches a checkpoint or finishes. It delivers alerts through Firebase Cloud Messaging, a service of Google LLC. When the app opens, Firebase registers it with Google under a random identifier, so that alerts can reach this device. That identifier says nothing about who you are.
Alerts are off until you turn them on. If you do, the app subscribes this device to each runner you follow, so Google knows which runners' alerts to deliver to it. Unfollowing a runner unsubscribes it. We never receive this list or the identifier: when a runner passes a checkpoint, we send one alert to Google for that runner, and Google delivers it to the devices subscribed to them.
You can switch alerts off at any time in your phone's Settings. When you delete the app, its registration lapses.
Apart from crash reports and alerts, the app sends nothing about you or your device. It has no accounts and no sign-in. It contains no advertising, no analytics and no tracking, and it does not track you across other companies' apps or websites. The only permission it asks for is to show notifications, for alerts; it doesn't ask for your location, contacts, photos or anything else on your device.
The runners you follow, your settings and the race data the app saves for offline use are stored on your device. We never receive them (if you turn on alerts, Google holds the subscriptions described above). Deleting the app deletes them, and “Clear saved data” in the app clears the saved race data.
To show races and maps, the app loads race data from Sportraxs' servers and map tiles from Esri (ArcGIS Online) and OpenStreetMap (CyclOSM). Like any internet request, these requests include your device's IP address so that the data can be sent back to it. We don't use it to identify you.
The app shows race information that event organisers publish through the Sportraxs timing platform: participants' names, bib numbers, nationality, category, positions, times and, where an event uses live tracking, their position on the course. If you took part in an event and have a question or request about your data, contact us.
The app is not directed at children under 13.
Crash reports and alert subscriptions don't identify you, so we usually can't link them to a person. You can still contact us with any privacy question or request, including under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) or the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
We will post any changes to this policy on this page and update the date above.
